Little Quiz

I recently read an old cookbook/nutrition book with a few processed-food ingredient lists in the sidebars throughout, and you were supposed to guess what the actual food was. It was very outdated, over 10 years, but I thought I'd put my own little game together from a few things on my shelves as an opening gambit for the nutrition night I've been asked to teach at Young Women's this week. Since I own very few processed foods, it was a little hard to find ingredient lists, but it was still fun. Here you go, try to guess the names of these foods, and I've posted the answers in the comments:

1. Sugar, high fructose corn syrup, water, natural and artificial flavor, citric acid, preservative (sodium benzoate), color (red 40).

2. Dairy product solids, nonfat milk, cocoa processed with alkali, calcium carbonate, cellulose gum, and less than 2% of vegetable oil (partially hydrogenated canola, and/or partially hydrogenated coconut or palm kernel and hydrogenated soybean), salt, artificial flavor, sodium caseinate, sucralose, sodium phosphate, acesulfame potassium.

3. Corn, whole grain wheat, sugar, whole grain rolled oats, brown sugar, almonds, high oleic vegetable oil (canola or sunflower oil), rice flour, wheat flour, rice, malted barley flour, salt, corn syrup, whey, honey, malted corn and barley syrup, cinnamon, artificial flavor, natural flavor, caramel color, annatto extract (color), reduced iron, niacinamide, vitamin B6, vitamin A palmitate, riboflavin, thiamin mononitrate, zinc oxide, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D.

4. Sugar, enriched flour bleached (wheat flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), cocoa processed with alkali, corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean and/or cottonseed oil, corn starch, salt, carob powder, artificial flavor, nonfat milk.

5. Water, wheat flour, mushrooms, soybean oil, salt, cornstarch, modified cornstarch, cream, whey powder, monosodium glutamate, soy protein concentrate, disodium phosphate, autolyzed yeast extract, spice, garlic powder, citric acid, maltodextrin, onion concentrate.

6. Water, sunflower oil, vegetable glycerin, coconut oil, stearic acid, beeswax, fragrance, glucose, xanthan gum, tocopherol, orange wax, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, sucrose stearate, sodium borate, honey, milk powder, beta carotene and vegetable oil, rosemary leaf oil, glucose oxidase and lactoperoxidase.

If you haven't already gotten some ideas, you may choose from No Sugar Added Hot Cocoa Mix, Cream of Mushroom Soup, Honey Bunches of Oats, Strawberry Syrup, and Fudge Brownie Mix. There's also one extra list in there to throw you off the scent, and it's actually a NON-food item. Take a bonus guess at it for fun.

As for this week's eats, we've been very valiant in eating our way through some mongo leftovers lately, finally leaving me free to cook lots of new stuff. I plan on having:

Caldo Verde, corn, flan for FHE dessert.

Creamy tuna casserole, salad with sprouts.

Curried rice pilaf.

Carrot soup, sourdough baguettes.

Pizza, frozen vegetables.

Whole roast chicken, lentil curry with spinach and winter vegetables.

Sourdough pancakes and waffles, bacon, applesauce.
